Great Works BridgeSouth Berwick’s current Vine Street Bridge over the Great Works River was condemned by the State in 2007. Since then, the 1953 bridge and adjacent roadway have become eyesores and liabilities to the town. Where they once connected us, now they divide neighborhoods and deprive citizens of a popular scenic and recreational thoroughfare. A covered wooden bridge will replace this dead end with a timeless community landmark, linking our unique past with a proud future. It will restore recreational opportunities for walking, jogging, bicycling, and enhanced access to Leigh’s Mill Pond and nearby Vaughan Woods.

The planned removal of the latest bridge in 2018 prompted a determined band of citizens to explore the possibility of funding and building a covered wooden bridge. They have engaged stakeholders and experts, including Kruger Energy International (KEI). which owns and operates the hydro dam on which the bridge rests, the Town of South Berwick, the Timber Framers Guild of North America, Maine Department of Transportation, and the Eastern Trail. Neighbors have made generous contributions to support a preliminary report and a conceptual design drawing that will provide a “launch pad” for this exciting project.
