The mission of Sobo Central is to nurture the town's unique sense of place by connecting and engaging citizens in community life and by fostering the long-term balance of the town's cultural, economic and social well-being as well as its built and natural environment.
SoBo Central was formed with the goal of bringing together several volunteer community groups that work for the betterment of South Berwick into one tax-exempt non-profit.
SoBo Central is registered with the state of Maine as a 501(c)3 charitable organization and includes six groups under its umbrella: Keep South Berwick Warm, the South Berwick Community Food Pantry, Hot Summer Nights concerts; GreenUp! South Berwick, Friends of Powderhouse Hill and SmartGrowth South Berwick.
Prior to the formation of SoBo Central none of these groups had official non-profit status and all are run by volunteers. Many of the same people worked with two or more of the groups, so SoBo Central helps bring together overlapping causes. The board of directors of SoBo Central includes representatives from each group. Under the umbrella of SoBo Central these groups can share some functions, such as bookkeeping, marketing, and insurance, reducing duplication and costs for each participating group.
